Gear Up For The Backcountry

Are you ready to try something new this year? Maybe it’s time to climb some mountain peaks and experience the solitude of the Sierra. There is a lot to be discovered in the backcountry including a deep feeling of accomplishment and breathtaking views.

For those of you who are new to the backcountry, these four steps seek to streamline your approach.

Step one, visit Pacos. We have a full gear lineup from Ortovox, Mammut, Salomon, Armada, Blizzard, G3, and more. There are quite a few unique equipment items that you are going to need and we have you covered right here at Pacos.

Our favorite product this week is the Mammut Barryvox Package. This package includes a digital 3-antenna avalanche transceiver, avalanche probe and the Alugator Ride shovel. This avalanche safety start-up kit is great package to get for your first ascent into the sport.

Step two, enroll in a backcountry avalanche safety class.

We recommend that you register and complete your AIARE Level 1 course before you enter the backcountry. If you have completed your level one course there are several other courses available for you to advance your avalanche education. Please visit the recommended resources below to explore your options.

Step three, check the conditions. The Sierra Avalanche Center provides the Lake Tahoe area with a wealth of information on backcountry avalanche insight, snowfall accumulation layers, and daily avalanche awareness information.

Step four, assemble a group of like-minded friends and go find a low angle, low stress location to gain experience in backcountry terrain. From simple, low angle, backyard tree laps to the summit of Mount Tallac overlooking iconic Emerald Bay, earning epic views and solitude is a soul inspiring experience. 🤙🏼
