Sagan Fondo in Truckee
The Sagan Fondo is coming to Truckee this weekend and we are all really excited that Peter Sagan picked sweet little Truckee to host his on-bike party. The race starts at Riverview Sports Park and will slither like a snake heading North through the old wild west riding past Prosser Creek Reservoir, Boca Reservoir, Stampede Reservoir and beyond.
What the heck is a fondo? The Gran Fondo started in Europe around 1970 and roughly translates into “Big Ride”. The proper Italian Gran Fondos are officially defined as a bicycle event at least 120 kilometers long, start en masse, roads are shut down and participants are individually chip-timed with prizes for the fastest riders in each category with a large meal served at the end of the event. The first Gran Fondo events in the United States were organized in 2009 and now take various shapes and forms with names like Beth’s Friends Fundeaux, The Punisher Ride and Tempo Velo Farmondo. The Sagan Fondo will include 3 course distances, traffic controlled intersections, category prizes for the top finishers and a post ride festival that includes food beer and music. Sounds like a lot of stoke for one day!
Get star struck with Peter Sagan. There is no doubt that Peter Sagan will go down in history as one of the legends of professional cycling. The Slovak rider has won the UCI World Championship three years in a row. The first time he rode the Tour de France in 2012, he won the prestigious ‘Maillot Vert’ points jersey held onto it every year until 2016. This month he is coming to the 2018 Amgen Tour of California to defend his seventh California Green Jersey for dominating the race’s overall Sprint competition. He is a wheelie fanatic and his compounding success make him a wonder to watch. It will be an honor to ride beside him in Truckee.
Before the California Tour, one of his favorite competitions of the year, he will be spending some time with us here in Truckee.
